Julie grew up learning within the Arcane University of High Reaches and praying at the Temple of the Hymn. Born of devout Ephaesian parents, Julie enjoyed learning about mundane subjects such as math, history, and science but she relished her arcane studies. Julie was naturally curious about many of different schools of magic and her faith in Ephaesus made her a perfect candidate for Adeptus training. Given the unique proposition of wishing to pursue the path of the Adeptus, Julie was tasked with seeking out former Adept of the Obsidian Academy, Hakkar Khazad in order to continue her training.

Julie sought out the old Haerkglar within Skolden'fel Stand Fortress and managed to convince the grouchy old Adeptus to show her how to achieve her goal of walking the line between priest and wizard. Julie toiled under Hakkar's tutelage for several years as she tried and failed many times to live up to his demanding expectations. Julie continued to study under Hakkar, however, it became apparent that Julie would never impress or exceed Hakkar's expectations. Finally pushed to the brink, Julie informed Hakkar that she would be returning to High Reaches and thanked him for his attempts at training her. Hakkar responded by calling Julie a quitter and yelling at her for wasting his time. Julie left for High Reaches depressed and feeling as if she had failed.

On the way back to High Reaches, Julie was attacked by a Dagger Snapper. The creature surprised her at first and very nearly overwhelmed the young woman before she reached within herself and calling upon the blessing of Ephaesus she warded the creature off with a prayer while at the same time she managed to kill the creature with an arcane spell. After the attack, Julie realized that she had managed to achieve a balance between divine and arcane spell casting, despite not being able to meet Hakkar's expectations. Julie immediately returned to Hakkar to inform him of her revelation. She was greeted by a smiling and welcoming Hakkar, who congratulated her on finally realizing that only she could find the path on her own. He further informed her that was much more stubborn about finding her own way than he had ever been and was quite impressed with her tenacity. Julie asked for advice going forward and Hakkar merely told her to follow her heart and mind down the directions of new discoveries that interested her the most.

Julie returned to High Reaches renewed by her progress towards becoming an Adeptus and continued her research into transmutation spells in order to help would be scholars stay safe while they explored the world outside of High Reaches.

With High Magus Mellicent Cole missing, and the passing of Magus Cameron Hovis, Magus Thermin has found herself in the uncomfortable position of leadership of the exceedingly large Academy.
