The Beyond is an existence that nearly defies being described, let alone explained, in terms a human mind could comprehend without descending into sheer insanity. It isn't that nightmares inhabit The Beyond, or that gibbering creatures intent upon feasting on living beings hail from The Beyond, it is the fact that what The Beyond represents cannot be fathomed or fashioned into words that would make any sense to the listener. From the perspective of a living being The Beyond simply should not be, its existence sending an odd sense of revulsion through those who ponder its existence for to long.

Much the same could be said of The Varpathian, a being that could only be described as inherently wrong. His history within the city of Atalan started when the first settlers from Halmoria began to experience the formation of perverse cults overnight composed of what had only been days before hard-working and morally upright citizens. These cults quickly descended into madness, sometimes violent and sometimes simply disturbing. Acts such as cannibalistic orgies, unhuman cacophonies, physical deformities, self-flagellation, bizarre mannerisms and abhorrent behavior followed in the wake of the cultists activities. Thankfully to the new inhabitants of Atalan the majority of the cultists activities have been stamped out through the vigilance of the Halmorian military units coupled with agents of the House of Concordant Cycles.

It did not take long for the settlers to learn what propelled these cults forward, the answer was a being only described in the feverish rantings of those cultists captured alive as The Varpathian, He Who Cannot Be Born. The descriptions varied wildly from cultist to cultist as to the exact characteristics of The Varpathain; some describe him as a massive being standing as tall as a building with leathery wings, a tentacled torso, feminine arms and hands, all upon a pair of massive fish scaled canine like legs, and the head of a what can only be described as a living nightmare. Whatever the case may be it is known that this entity, what the natives call a Primordial, leaves nothing but shattered minds and twisted personas in its wake.

Some of the most trusted scholars of the Obsidian Academy have attempted to discern The Varpathians motives and origins with the hope that through understanding The Varpathian they may find a means of control. All attempts to do so up until now have failed, many Ephaesian Adepts have postulated that perhaps The Varpathian simply has no motives or origins, a being that simply should not exist. This conclusion however leaves the Academy all the more concerned, as such a thing as an enigma that cannot be solved is pure anathema to their existence.

It is believed that The Varpathian was destroyed during The Fall of Atalan.
