The Karrgath Hills
From Myths of Atalan Wiki
These hills are quite impressive from a distance. Easily seen from the Torverra Plains, these hills rise up out of Eramere to impressive heights. Though not quite as tall as the mountain ranges of the North, East, and South, the Karrgath Hills provide a stunning break to the rolling flatness of the Torverra Plains.
The hills for the most part are gently sloping and quite lush with various types of shrubs, bushes, an occasional tree, and prairie grasses from the plains growing along the lower portions of the hills. The hills themselves once provided an excellent stop for the Arn Zvar'Clahoon because the grasses surrounding the lower hills are quite fertile. The natural minerals in the surrounding rocks refresh the local plants making it an excellent location for grazing.
However, the Karrgath Hills also contain steep walled ravines that are inhabited by fierce tribal warriors known as the Karr. The stunning green of the hills is sharply contrasted by the almost endless brown of these ravines. The ravines are so steep that sunlight has a hard time penetrating, and the vegetation within is often discolored and unhealthy looking. The steep walls are not the only reason for the dry and unhealthy vegetation. The natural rains coming in from the coast are caught up in the front part of the hills and the clouds are typically much drier when they reach the backside of the hills where many of the ravines are located.
The most well known danger within the Karrgath Hills are the Karr. Many adventurers have ventured into the hills and ultimately the ravines to face these tribal warriors. The strength of a tribe of Karr can be judged on how green and lush their ravine appears. Few of the ravines are actively growing plants and can sustain a healthy population and only the strongest of the Karr tribes can hold these for themselves as all other tribes constantly try to take the growing ravines for their own. The constant need for food and growing space makes the Karrgath Hills quite dangerous for any would be farmers and even though the ground outside the ravines are fertile; the tactically unsafe positions would be easily overrun by marauding Karr. Not to mention whatever else lurks within the Karrgath Hills as yet undiscovered, or the many sightings of drakes and dragons during the past century.
