Mathias was born after the fall of Atalan within High Reaches and served within the Militia was was his duty for all citizens of High Reaches. During his time within the Militia he was made quartermaster of the Militia and became well known for his interesting tactic for new requests. Universal denial. Mathias' made it almost impossible to gain replacement equipment, demanding to know why the original gear wasn't good enough and what kind of an idiot cannot keep his gear in order. At first many in the militia were shocked an appalled by his strategy but apparently being berated by a man that only stands 5'2 for not taking adequate care of ones gear had the desired affect of ensure that replacement gear was sought only as a last resort. Additionally, Mathias' attitude ensured that frivolous requests were not sent his way and helped to keep the operation costs of the militia much lower than they might be otherwise.

As with all things, Mathias' time within the militia came to and end. Afterwards he was approached by Marshal Hastings of the Knights of the Shield about taking over as quartermaster for the Knights, stating that they could use his unusual but effective tactics at supplies. Mathias thought the offer over and finally accepted on the grounds that he was given full autonomy over the supplies of the Knights. Hasting's agreed and Mathias moved to Torica in short order, where he has been ever since. Some that knew he in his heyday in the militia would say that he has mellowed, given that requests for gears are not met immediately with a shout of "No! We don't grow money here!" But rather a calm and collected, "Of course not. I'm sure you're just exaggerating the need for that." Though hard, Mathias is a fair man and will always make sure every man and woman in the Knights have exactly what they need to fight when the time comes.
