Atalan
In the year 957 IY, a naval fleet from the Old Empire of Halmoria discovered a continent far to the east of their existing shipping routes. Imperialism had just taken hold in Halmoria; Lord Emperor Alphaeus III hungrily expanded the borders of the Old Empire in every imaginable direction. Before long, the emperor sent armed forces, tradesmen, and farmers to settle in and establish the newly found land. The first ships to arrive were greeted by the existence of a city.
The massive, rugged stone fortress stood silently and eerily. Its spires reached for the skies above, casting still shadows on the structures below. However, not a soul was found within its granite walls. The only clue as to those who inhabited this abandoned metropolis before the settlers got there was a lone obelisk in middle of the silent city, stretching up to the sky, the gate to which read "Atalan."
The newly arrived Halmorians began to unravel the secrets of Atalan, as the largest push in settlement began in the year 962 IY. Noblemen, merchants, adventurers, pioneers, vagabonds, and those wishing to flee from the Old Empire flocked to the new colony. The migration happened for a plethora of reasons, some of which are darker than others. The legacy of Atalan was completely dependent on its immigrants.
The city of Atalan consisted of five districts. The Trade District, the Noble District, the Army District, the Docks, aka the Slums, and the Church District. Each of these districts, with the exception of the docks, were found almost entirely as they remained many years later, although empty. The docks were soon after constructed by the Halmorians, Lakoi and Valkshir arriving, along with mostly wooden housing for the dock workers close by. This collection of houses soon grew very quickly to become one of the largest settlements within the city of Atalan.
Immigrants still arrived to the city each year, though the push for settlement slowed dramatically after the events of the Long Night. It was also at this time that those wishing to return to Halmoria began to be refused re-entry. The city stood alone for many years, until eventually seceding from the Empire within the year after the end of the Halmoria-Kalimvar War.
In the Summer of 988IY Atalan came under major attack from both inside and without, as The Varpathian attempted to come into this world. Thwarted by the Overseers and the work of some sort of Guardians, this was prevented and Eramere was saved, but alas the city itself fell into ruin and is currently occupied by various manifestations of the Beyond.
