High Reaches Militia

After High Reaches was discovered, it was decided that it would not be owned by any one race, but shared between many for its resources. In the beginning days, it was first held by the joint forces of Zvarkglar and Syl'vae, alongside members of the Silver Pieces Mercantile. It was not very long however, before humans who had lost their homes in Atalan began to swell the ranks of the settlement. The need grew for more than just guards of a mining operation, but protection from both within and without. The militia grew from this need.

Soon the militia had two forces of separate yet coexisting intent - the Field Force to protect the settlement from rampaging karr and hungry dragons, as well as the bandits and others attacking travelers and trade routes, and the City Force to keep the peace between all of the various races as well as to solve crimes occurring within High Reaches.

At the beginning, many within the lower ranks of the militia were human. Some joined the militia simply as a necessity of requirement for residency, while others saw it as an opportunity to further protect those that survived. These days membership in the militia still qualifies one for residency in the High Reaches community. However over time there are now many other races as part of the militia, and it is quite common to find Haerkglar or Syl'vae serving among the ranks as they have done over the past 20 years. Chorav and Gnomes also fill out the ranks, though in a lesser capacity. Some Orcs that see the new-found peaceful organization as being the future of Eramere have joined as infantry and enforcers of law on the streets.

It is widely understood the militia is for keeping peace and general protection of the community. It is not meant to be an army and thus has no direct authority outside the walls of High Reaches.

In recent time it can be said that the High Reaches Militia is a collaborative force that works through unity to offer protection and safety to the citizens of High Reaches settlement. Understanding that each race and each individual can contribute in a variety of ways, the Militia continues to be comprised of individual Forces that specialize in a certain area regarding the defense of the settlement. Each Force ultimately answers to the Captain of the Militia but often the Internal Force Commanders are trusted enough to run day to day operations and coordinate with each other when necessary.

Forces of the Militia

Field Force

Responsible for the areas outside the immediate settlement, the Field Force is the first line of defense for High Reaches. They are tasked with ensuring that the approaches to High Reaches remain open, and maintaining a watch on surrounding areas. They are the first response to potentially dangerous situations. Their duties include scouting, road patrols, disturbance investigation, merchant train escorting, initial response to outside threats, etc. Ideally members of this Force should have some ability at stealth, observation, endurance, and combat training.

City Force

Responsible for the defense and protection of the settlement within the walls, the City Force is the primary defense force for the settlement as well as the only force of the Militia able to act as law enforcement. They are tasked with defense of the walls, entry points, and patrols of the settlement itself. Not all members of the City Force are allowed to act as law enforcers, only those that have received special instruction and clearance as determined by the Captain. The duties of the City Force include, defense of the city during an attack, checking entry papers of visitors, patrolling settlement streets, attending/performing training of Citizen Force, etc. Ideally members of this force understand how to fight as a unit, have training in defensive tactics, observational skills, and combat training.

Citizen Force

Those citizens not part of the militia are still required to aid the city in times of crisis. All citizens must attend monthly training so that the militia learns what skills are available to them, and they can be trained in how best to serve the settlement in a time of crisis. This force is extremely varied and has no set duties or abilities except to fill in where and when it can.
