While a majority of Wizards study Sorcerers and derive the formulas that reproduce their powers, Scholars of the Obelisk also delve deeply into the runic mysteries from which Atalan was named. Only those mages with the greatest talent and dedication have had success in decoding mystical runes found covering the Obelisk. They were exceptionally rare even within the Academy in Atalan when the Obelisk was a prominent part of the facility, only gaining permission to study in such depth after many years of research and dedication. Rumors once circulated through the Academy that these Scholars discovered the fundamental properties of arcane magic itself, properties by which magic can be easily and efficiently sculpted. Now, many years later, these secrets are only unlocked by those arcane casters with the tenacity and the patience to sift through hundreds of volumes of rune study and countless hours examining the Obelisk from afar.
